Questions

Are you interested in buying a Chromebook?

  • If so, you've come to the right place. We've put together this guide to answer some of the most common questions about using and owning a Chromebook.

  • The information and answers below will provide you with all the details you need to make an informed decision and find out if owning a Chromebook is right for your needs.

What is a Chromebook?

  • A Chromebook is a laptop that runs Google's Chrome operating system and uses an operating system based on Linux. It's easy to use and has built-in virus protection.

  • Some people choose Chromebooks because they're lightweight, with low-cost hardware that makes them inexpensive to purchase or lease.

  • They're also good choices for people who want to browse the web, check email, and do other tasks online using their web browser the core feature of Chromebooks called "Chrome apps".

  • Chromebooks have come down in price recently, making them more affordable than ever!

  • They are typically sold at retail stores under $300 (USD), but you should check out our deals section, where we list special offers on refurbished models that cost less than $200 (USD).

  • There are also used models available from other sellers on eBay if you're looking for something even cheaper!

Where can I find the latest information about Chrome OS?

  • If you're looking for the latest information about Chrome OS, start with Google's website.

  • You can also check out Chromebook.com and ChromebookCentral.com as well as reddit.com/r/chromebook

What are the advantages of using a Chromebook instead of a laptop?

  • Chromebooks are more secure than laptops because Google is constantly updating them.

  • You don't need antivirus software for a Chromebook, because it is built into the operating system and continually scans for viruses and malware.

  • Since Chromebooks run Chrome OS, they have fewer bugs than Windows.

  • They're cheaper than laptops (you can get a good one for less than $200).

  • They weigh less (2-3 pounds) and are lighter (1-2 pounds) than most laptops on the market today - this makes them great devices to take on long trips or even just when you need to carry something around town with you all day long.

Can I use a Chromebook at work or school?

  • If you have a Chromebook, you can use it at work or school. However, Chromebooks are designed for use in the cloud and not ideal for people who want to run local apps.

  • If you're looking for a device that can run local applications on a Windows or Mac OS environment, this is not the right choice.

  • However, if your organization is looking at standardizing on cloud technology like Google Apps, this may be an option worth exploring.

Is a Chromebook right for me?

If you're looking for a simple and fast device that gets you online, does what you need it to do, and then gets out of your way a Chromebook might be perfect for you. If any of these are true:

  • You want a simple, fast, and secure computer

  • You want to get online and get work done or play games

  • And the only time you'll ever be offline is when you're sleeping or at work (or maybe traveling on an airplane)

How is Chrome different than Android or iOS (iPad)?

  • Chrome is a web browser, while Android and iOS are operating systems.

  • In other words, Chrome can be used on many different devices, including laptops, desktops, and tablets (and even some phone models).

  • On the other hand, Android and iOS are only used on mobile devices.

Which Chromebooks support touch?

If you're looking to purchase a Chromebook that's designed for touch, check out Samsung's Chromebook Plus or Pro and the new Asus Flip. If you're not sure whether your Chromebook supports touch, here are some ways to find out:

  • Check the manufacturer's website for information about the device.

  • Check your device's Chrome OS version number (go to Settings > Help, then select About Chrome OS). The newest version of Chrome OS supports touch input.

  • If your computer is running an older version of Chrome OS (or a different operating system), it probably doesn't support touch input yet.

  • Browse Google Play and see if any apps are installed on your device using any touch controls. If they do, then it's likely that they work just fine with your hardware set-up as well!

Will I get automatic updates on my Chromebook and apps?

Yes, you will receive automatic updates on your Chromebook and apps. You can check for new system updates in the status area at the bottom-right corner of your screen.

If you don't want to receive automatic updates, follow these steps:

  • Click the status area at the bottom-right corner of your screen.

  • Click Settings.

  • In 'Search,' type Advanced settings , then select Advanced settings in the search results pane. If you don't see this option, ensure your Chromebook is updated to Chrome OS version 69+.

  • If it's not, install an update and restart your computer before continuing with these steps.

How do I get more storage for my device?

There are several ways you can add more storage to your device.

  1. First, you can use the microSD card slot to add additional space for images, videos, and other files. Some devices come with this capability built in if yours does not, simply buy a compatible card from any store.

  2. Second, you can connect an external hard drive or flash drive (also known as a USB hub) via the USB port on your device and store data there.

  3. Thirdly, if all else fails, it is possible to access cloud-based storage services such as Google Drive or Dropbox directly from within Android itself using apps like Google Photos or Dropbox;

These services allow users unlimited amounts of free cloud storage so long as they have high-speed internet service at home or work (or at least during periods when they aren't traveling).

Are special apps needed to access Google Drive and Google Play files on my Chromebook?

  • Yes, you can use Google Drive on your Chromebook. You'll need to download the Chrome web browser from the Chrome Web Store if you don't already, then use it to access Google Drive and all your other files.

  • Yes, you can also use Google Play on a Chromebook. You'll need to install some Android apps from the Google Play Store if you haven't already, then download whatever content or software you want from there onto your Chromebook (or mobile device).

  • There are many other apps that work in Chrome OS you can even run Microsoft Office or Adobe PDF on a Chromebook if desired!

Can I use a Chromebook to view documents from Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, Apple Pages, etc.?

Yes. There are two ways you can view and edit documents from Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, Apple Pages, and other popular applications.

The first is to use the Google Docs or Google Drive app to view and edit these files.

This will allow you to open the document using your Chromebook's native file manager and edit it the same way you would on any other device (e.g., a desktop or laptop).

The second option is to download the document from its original source and then open it directly from your Chromebook's file manager, as mentioned above by selecting "Open With" from within your Android apps menu (or by right-clicking on any given file if opening through Windows Explorer).

This method allows for greater flexibility when working offline because no internet connection is required for viewing or editing documents stored locally on your computer's hard drive; however it does come with some limitations:

  • The maximum size of supported files is 15MB per unit (see more about this below if interested)

  • Some formats, such as Office 365 cannot be read directly due mainly due to their complex format requirements, which include features like macros (*cough!* McAfee... *cough!)

There are many questions about Chromebooks; if you have one, this guide can help answer some of them

What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a laptop computer that runs on Google's Chrome operating system, which lets users access the internet and run web applications.

The hard drive or other storage space on a Chromebook holds only the user's files the operating system lives on the cloud and updates automatically when connected to WiFi.

Since all your files live in the cloud rather than locally on your device, your work can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

This also makes it easy for multiple people to share one device without worrying about copying each other's files or getting confused about who changed what file last (or where).

How do I use my Chromebook?

Using a Chromebook requires few technical skills or previous experience with computers: Simply turn it on, log into your Google account (if you don't already have one, sign up here),

Then start using any web apps already installed through Chrome OS (such as Gmail) by visiting their sites online in any web browser such as Safari/Edge/Firefox etcetera...

Once connected to WiFi at home or work, simply log in via these browsers as usual no need to install additional software!
